As far as I know, most anti-deppresants are by prescription only. If your really serious about taking anti-deppresants, I would see your doctor.

I don’t know of a pill but I do know … caffeine (it stays in your body 8 days) contributes to depression as well as alcohol. If you eliminate those two things from your diet and force yourself to get out and be active it helps depression. Sometimes medication is necessary to overcome depression. But if you’re wanting to try something first then I’d try the above. Depression runs in my family. And believe me… eliminating caffeine and alcohol works wonders! Good luck and hope you are feeling better soon!

Since I have been off perscription anti depressants, I keep my head above water by taking daily vitamin B supplements. It really works for me! Also, you don’t have to worry about dose dependant side effects.

Being on anti depressants was like wearing a sign that says “kick me”; nothing hurt. Going off was a nightmare in itself. They do save some people’s lives, but you are right to want to avoid them.

I’ve dealt with depression for most of my life. I’ve been on prescription anti-depressants before when I couldn’t manage things. I’ve been prescription-free for three or four years now. I still deal with depression, but when I feel myself getting to the point where I lose my handle on it, I take St. Johns Wort. It does take two or three weeks for it to build up in my system and I notice any effects, but for me, it acts like a mood stabilizer. So instead of over-reacting emotionally, like I typically do when depressed, I have a more appropriate emotional response. The St. Johns Wort gets me past the point when I could spiral out of control and I can usually stop taking it within a few months.

There is no doubt but that physical exercise is the best anti-depressant with or without a prescription. It is proven to restore brain chemistry better than even prescription anti-depressants, has fewer side-effects, and is much cheaper. It is also effective for virtually everyone willing to try it. Work out consistently for two weeks daily, this gets one hooked on exercise, and then make it a part of your lifestyle. The next best OTC anti-depressant would be boobs. Nobody can stare at boobs and feel depressed.

I havent even heard of an anti-depressant being sold over the counter.I will have to check into that. I would love to go to the drug store and buy an anti-depressant pill.
