Yes, i think they can, but the problem is scepticism. People have to have a common belief of some kind to come together and celebrate like this. It’s more motivating to believe you’re doing something of cosmic importance, and many people may not buy into that, so they may not be as engaged as they need to be for it to help. I suppose they could take a “Festivus” - style approach.

What do think about NEW YEAR EVE. Iam sure u take a resolution or what so ever it is. Similarly Onam or vishu or diwali is like a new year for some. They in the name of god do good deeds. They get some relief

Many people feel alone and left out during festivals and end up being more depressed. Festivals are just an excuse for the haves to flaunt their wealth and make the have-nots feel bad. I don’t think they help depression at all.

All festivals, and festivities, are motivators, aimed at making life interesting for a lot of people who find life difficult on many counts! They may even be viewed as distractions, meant to keep your mind wandering from some basic problem areas in life!

Yes, these are some of the ways where the festive gaieties and crescendos would lift us up to a altered states of consciousness and thereby freeing from the mundane worrying state of consciousness. In the process, the mood get elevated and the stimuli that triggers depressive mood gets weakened.
