No. Drugs like Prozac, etc are all prescription only. I assume you mean ANTI-DEPRESSENTS.

You might try B12 or St. John’s Wort. But do your own research first.

  16. Cheyku says:

You can get St. John’s Wart over the counter. I have taken it though and it made me feel somewhat robotic. I knew I was having emotions but I couldn’t really laugh or cry or anything. However, I do know that alot of people do like the stuff.

  17. Mellie says:

There are herbal remedies that tout slogans that they “help” with mental clarity. But as for specific medications like Zoloft, Lexapro, etc. - you cannot buy without a doctor’s prescription.

  18. ShoeLoverz says:

No you can’t you should go see a doctor, and they can check out what kinda depression you have to give you good medicine.

  19. Misty M says:

You need to seek a doc. advice, but if you think you defiantly need something try St. Johns Wart. One side effect is increase bleeding time. So if you go to the doc. include it in a list of medicines you are taking. Also if you are on any med’s make sure that you can take them together.

  20. Zanztetuken says:

i dont think you can because some antidepressants actually cause suicidal tendencies sometimes.

  21. staralise says:

Im pretty sure you cant. But you can easily get them from a doctor. I take large doses of depression pills each day because I have OCD. You take more depression based pills for having OCD than depression. It takes about a month before you notice any change.

As I dont have depression I had bad side effects and showed many signs of depression when I first went on them, but they disapered after 2 weeks. Be warned though, if you stop taking them after 4 weeks your body usually goes into withdrawal and it is the most awful feeling possible.

Talk to your doctor first =)

And if you wanted the pills for recreational use.. just look after yourself! :)

  22. Boston K says:

there are over the counter natural supplements for depression
    1. 5-HTP
    2.St.John’s Wort

  23. Bookworm says:

No, you cannot buy depression medications over the counter. These meds not only need a prescription, but you should be monitored while on these meds. They have dangerous side effect and you would be safer taking the meds under a doctor.

  24. mistresslockley2003 says:

St. John’s wort is available over the counter at most pharmacies, walmart and target.
St John’s wort is today most widely known as a herbal treatment for depression. In some countries, such as Germany, it is commonly prescribed for mild depression, especially in children, adolescents, and where cost is a concern. however, in some countries (such as Ireland) a prescription is required. Extracts are usually in tablet or capsule form, and also in teabags and tinctures.

Several studies and meta-analyses have found it to be effective in the treatment of mild to moderate depression, with fewer side effects than many conventional antidepressants. Other studies, including a major NIH study that focused on moderate to severe depression, have shown no improvements.
i have not heard of B12 as a treatment for depression. it helps make red blood cells and keeps your nervous system working properly. It is normally involved in the metabolism of every cell of the body, especially affecting the DNA synthesis and regulation but also fatty acid synthesis and energy production.
you should talk to a doctor. he/she can give you some guidance as to what you should take. i personally am not a big fan of prescription drugs. i try natural remedies first then go the prescription route if needs be. good luck!

  25. Máire Siobhán says:

No, you can’t. The medications that help depression are by prescription only.

Sam-E, St. John’s Wort, and other herbs are unregulated by the Food & Drug Administration and so not only have the manufacturers not had to do studies that prove they do what they say they do, but there is no guarantee that the amounts are equal from dose to dose.

They are cause side efforts in many people, like liver problems, heart palpitations, etc. No blind research studies have shown any of these things to be a remedy for depression. Some people may take them and also have an improvement in their depression. It could be coincidental, or it could have not been depression, if they self-diagnosed.

Depression is not just caused by one thing; it’s a description of a very complex condition in the brain caused by the imbalance of one or more chemicals. You can’t guess what those are and tinkering with things that MIIGHT change your brain chemistry with over the counter crap will either prolong the depression, or make it worse, or add another problem on top of it. Even with a medical degree, it takes insight and skill to get the medications just right for each person with depression, but it’s worth the effort. Some people require just a short-course, maybe 90 days of meds, to get back on track permanently. Others (like me) may require more long term meds. That’s fine–whatever it takes to feel good. Psychotherapy along with the meds is important to learning how to cope in ways to avoid depression in the future, if you have any issues with that. Go–it will improve your life for the long term.

If you think you are depressed, why don’t you call your primary care doctor and go for a physical and a confidential consultation about it?
