How can you cure depression without medical assistance?

The helpless romantic asked:
I can’t afford medical care, so I’ve been stuck with this depression for 19 months now. It’s getting really obnoxious, and it’s not fun. Are their any like, over the counter medications, or herbs or anything that can help? If you could leave religion out of this, that would be great. ^^
And also, I’m also very prone for stroke, and my heart is not the strongest, so please keep that in mind. I want to cure my depression, not die.

Depression is kinda like your mind telling you “Your worthless and you won’t amount to anything’ or negative things like that over and over. So in a nutshell it’s pretty much all in your mind. DO NOT get into any depression drugs because it will either leave you depending on them to work instantly at some time, hooked, or leave you going crazy. Just join a group or something, it’s all in your head.
Sorry, Hopeless Romantic, there is no cure for depression. There are medications that hopefully help you manage the depressed and anxiousness, and along with meds, therapy, single and group, and finding a support group is very good to maintai a successful life. I’ve had bipolar and anxiety disorder for 15 years. I had periods for almost a year when I forgot I had depression. Now, I’ve been fighting for my life for the past 2 years straight. You cannot do this without medical attention, sorry. You need to replace the chemicals that are depleted in the brain that is causing the depression in the first place. Good luck.
haha when you say herbs I go right to the reefer…this stuff will CHILLL you out man it will CHILLL you out
Like the other lady said, there is no “cure” for depression-it doesn’t go away on its own, unless you give it some attention. There are no over the counter medications, herbs, nothing like that. If you see any of that crap, because there is a lot out there, it is just that-crap. Stay away from that. You say your health is not the best, well, depression makes your health worse. You need to see a counselor, go to therapy, and I think you have been suffering for a very long time, and you need to try antidepressants. The first answer is garbage, about getting sick or “hooked” on antidepressants. Many people with untreated emotional issues often turn to illicit drugs to help them cope-do you want to end up that way? There are ways to get affordable treatment. I don’t know where you live, but you must have some sort of government funded, county-based health care program/hospital where you can go to seek treatment. Look in your phone book under ’social services”, or go on the internet and look up Salvation Army, or Goodwill Industries, and also check for any community clinics. Where I live, there are a lot of clinics for low income people with mental illness-they even treat homeless people, because they know how serious depression, anxiety, etc is. To get your medications, you can apply to patient assistance programs, every pharmaceutical company offers them, and you get you meds for free-that’s what I do. There are so many options out there for you to get help from the medical community, which is what is going to help you-no herb, no friends, no parents, no books, nothing like that is going to get you a level of functioning that something like counseling will. You won’t die, but you won’t control your symptoms either if you do nothing about them. Well, what if i does get to that point-what if someday you do consider suicide? Seek treatment, email me if you’d like I will do research for you.
Seriously, gluten free diet. I found that sensitivity to gluten was the cause of my depression. What happens is your body produces antibodies to gluten. The antibodies attack your intestines causing damage. Most of the serotonin in your body is located in your intestines, so if they’re damaged, your body can’t use it effectively. Celiac disease is the most well known kind of gluten intolerance, but there are others that are more common. About 1 in 100 people have celiac disease and 1 in 7 have non-celiac gluten intolerance. Depression and anxiety are the number 1 and 2 most common symptoms of it. I had really bad anxiety and depression and they disappeared very quickly on the gluten free diet. Start taking sublingual vitamin b12 too. It’s a critical vitamin and if gluten is your problem, you’re probably having trouble absorbing it. If you take it sublingual (under the tongue) it can bypass your damaged intestines.
Hi,
i have heard of some natural nutrients that are supposed to help with depession. my aunt had depression problems and she started taking the nutrients and has been really happy with the results. She took medication and drugs for 9 years and now no longer takes them. She said everyone’s body is different, it may work for some and may not for others. Not sure if that was something you might be able to try to see if it helps you.
my email is and i can forward you information sheets that you can read about it.
