counter depression
hello asked:

i went to my neurologist yesterday and another time before a couple months ago. shes convinced that i am suffering from mild depression :(( so she keeps bringing up the subject while my mom was right there. i think she might be right but the problem is that my depression is from my parents. even though they were there through my childhood and still are here i feel i was neglected until i was in 6th grade. they are good parents just not the best parents and i hate for them to find out im going through this because of them.

so please help me find over the counter medicine
-not allergic to anything
-i am a vegetarian and dont eat fish either so no fish oil please.
well i know i need to eat healthy but its really hard to eat right when your a lazy vegetarian so i need a list of all the vitamins, minerals, protein, ect that vegetarians lack(lack of energy so i have mood swings)…i am a very unhealthy eater so i need to fix that first. or maybe some really healthy foods that i could buy

alright people its not really that serious to where i neeeeed a doctor….i just need that neurologist to get off my back. i’ve already figured out that my parents arent going to find out so please try to help me if you can, if not then dont answer.

Consuming the right food is crucial for your health. You can try supplementing your diet with acai berry, it is not solely a widely tested and acknowledged weight loss product, it is a superfood too. There is a risk free trial offered at I’ve been using it for three weeks now and it’s certainly having an effect!!

Dont buy into those gimicks. Go see a proffessional and take real medication. they are professionals for a reason!

St Johns Wort and folic acid has helped others with mild depression. There are slight side effects with SJW like sun sensitivity and reactions with some birth control medication.

You should stop protecting your parents! They’re supposed to be protecting you, not the other way around. And besides, this is probably not even their fault. Depression is often a genetic disorder.

You can buy St. John’s Wort and SamE (sp?) over the counter, but I wouldn’t even try those without a doctor’s guidance. Just because they’re natural and OTC doesn’t mean they’re safe for everyone (St. John’s Wort made me go psycho). See a psychiatrist before you start experimenting. Listen to him - he’s the expert.

If you can’t take fish oil, try some flaxseed oil or borage oil - they can improve your mood. I find that Vitamin C gives me lots of energy (translate = good mood), and good ol’ coffee is a great mood-booster, as long as you don’t overdo it. A Vitamin B-complex supplement can work wonders for you.

There is also stuff you should avoid - lots of sweets, refined carbohydrates, anything that’s refined or processed, and - worst of all - soda pop, even non-caffeinated. Some people say chocolate improves your mood - for me, it makes it ten times worse. Be very tuned in to your body and how it reacts to food - you may need to make some diet changes.

Neurologists don’t address emotional/mental issues. That’s the purvey of psychiatrists and psychologists.

There is no OTC medicine for depression. The best therapy is counseling with a professional.

Life isn’t the way it’s supposed to be. It’s the way it is. What makes the difference is how you cope.

Please don’t go through life telling yourself your depression is down to your parents as you would be putting yourself in hell for a long time ….hell right here on earth….believe me!! Torturing yourself with that thought ……it is so not worth it. Tell yourself that everything happens for a reason and what does not kill you or destroy you usually makes you stronger………..as long as you do not wallow in a sea of bitterness that is. Besides, if you believe in God you will believe that you get rewarded for patience in suffering……….patience being the key word so you have to move on because you need to believe it happened for the better good in the long run….even though you may have had some sadness.

Anyway, forgive your parents as you will feel so much better for it and hopefully very many rewards will be reaped that way.

It would be beneficial for you to take omega 3. Since you are vegetarian you can take either flaxseed oil capsules or sea buckthorn capsules as a source of omega 3. Other than that you could try Rhodiola rosacea [arctic root]. It is reputed to help with all types of stress as well as depression. A faulty diet can contribute to depression so make sure you eat well………..yes you do need a source of omega 3 for your well-being. B vitamins and magnesium combined with calcium may also help……great for the nervous system as a whole. Deficiency in any one nutrient could trigger a depressive episode. And not having enough sunlight exposure could also play a role….probably depressing the immune system [via a lack of vitamin D] which would impact on the nervous system too.

Do some sport or join a gym……the endorphins released from exercise have a known anti-depressant effect……endorphins are “feel good” hormones.

    Take care.
    Best wishes.

Maybe some vitamen B or protien supplements could help. However if it’s genetic you may need proper meds and a good therapist to help alleviate your symptoms.
