Most of antidepressants are prescriptions because people abuse them.

You should be able to get Zoloft or Lexapro over the counter but it will depend on how your body will get adjust to these.. typically 3-4 weeks. Lexapro is pretty new with less side effects.

    What about counseling?

Well first of all do you have clinical depression or just depression… the two are very different.

Clinical depression is a chemical inbalance in the brain that makes the depression… (the one you should get medician for because it will balance you back out.)

Next is regular depression… everybody gets it and it is normal… (No medication should be given for this because if edicain is given then it can give you clinical depression.)

Keep in mind that everyone gets depressed so if it is an on and off thing then it is normal… And medicain will only cause the depression to be many times worse because you will find out what depression really is.

Some people report St Johns Wort. I don’t think the research done by the medical community agrees. Some people seriously need the help of prescribed medicine. I know medicine in the USA is high. But, look at it as changing your life. What is changing your life worth to you? Good luck. Many doctors will give you samples, and help you find ways to get these medications at reduced rates. Check local clinics too.

I don’t know of any OTC products that actually work. You might try to go to the website of the drug company that makes your prescribed drug and see if they can help you with lower expenses for your medication. Drug companies will often help those on a lower income and/or no insurance. It’s worth a try. If you have trouble finding the site contact me with the company name and address. I will help you try to find it.

This is the best help I know to give you at this time. I hope it helps.

    Sincerely,
    Terry

    PS: I am bipolar.
