St. John’s Wort is said to help with that, and Kava Kava. However, none of this has been supported by the FDA. Talk to a doctor, and find out what’s right for you. You will need to be assessed and diagnosed for depression. Just because you might bee sad, does not mean you are suffering from clinical depression.
Any, as long as you take enough.
I don’t think there’s anything over the counter to treat depression, it’s something only a doctor can diagnose and prescribe treatment for.
There’s an herbal remedy supplement called St. John’s Wort that claims to help with depression, but I don’t know if it’s effective. You may want to do some research on that. It’s available in just about any drug store, and maybe even large supermarkets. It’s about the same price as other vitamins and such that would be on the shelf near it. Personally, I don’t trust it. Real depression is serious, and should be treated by a doctor.
Something you CAN do to improve your general sense of well-being is EXERCISE. Working up a good sweat releases endorphins, which are one of the ‘feel-good’ chemicals in your brain. Get out, get active, and feel better. If this doesn’t help, see a doctor.
edit to add: I just saw your addition that you don’t have insurance. There must be a free clinic or something in your city. If you’re a student, ask your school’s medical office what to do. If all else fails, go to the emergency room.
Yes it’s called a good diet and lifestyle with plenty of exercise. You can also buy a sun box or bulb that helps with SAD seasonal deficit of sunshine.
St Johns Wort is very effective for a lot of people, for mild to moderate depression. I took it for a full year and it helped me hugely - and kept me off antidepressants when I was noticeably but mildly depressed. I also took it recently - but my depression got worse because of life events and I have to say, it doesn’t help much once you hit debilitating signed-off-work can’t function sort of depression.
Give it a go, it’s not exactly cheap (£11 for 100 tabs in the UK) but it is worth a shot, as it has no side effects that I found - except that it can’t be taken with the contraceptive pill. It lessens the pill’s effectiveness markedly.
Make sure you get one with a good concentration of Hypericin, the active ingredient. Mine is 0.30%, and it should be printed on the bottle.
Before you go to pills try some natural stuff, here are 4:
Tea is a very relaxing remedy for the body and mind. It relaxes the body with its warmth and aroma. Drinking herbal tea is a very good solution for depression; mint, chamomile, rosemary tea and other herbal flavors are recommended.
Warm bath with essential oils is the most relaxing solution for clearing the mind.
Clearing the mind and relaxing the body is a good solution for depressed people; that can give the person some time to think and put things in proportions. Spinach is known to be beneficial for preventing depression. Eat spinach every day fresh or cooked and you will feel the deference.
Exercising and a good night sleep make the body and mind more relaxed. It takes the aggressions out and leaves you with peace and relaxation.
